The team here are in training for our Helicopter Half Marathon which means healthy living, clean eating - and cutting back the alcohol!! But all training and no fun can make for quite a dull life, as anyone who has ever trained for a big sports event will tell you. While we want our half marathon to raise funds for Wales Air Ambulance, we also want to have some fun - so we've been checking out some mocktails to give us something to look forward to at the end of those training runs.

We have nothing against mocktails, and we'd positively encourage everyone to take time out from alcohol now and again - whether that's as a grand gesture like Dry January, or just cutting back what you drink week to week. However, it's important to have an alternative tipple stashed away so you don't feel like you're missing out. Many of the mocktail recipes we tried were quite inspid or overly sweet. Over the next 3 weeks we'll be sharing some mocktail recipes that we think hit the mark in a slightly more adult way - drinks that are worthy of marathon (or half-marathon) runners!

A Runners Revival Mocktail photographed top down in a rocks glass with ice and lemon and star anise garnish

First up is the Runner's Revival. Sophisticated rooibos tea and citrus flavours combined with some fizz and a dash of spice, this is reminiscent of our In the Welsh Wind Signature Style flavour profile (- and if we're honest, after training is done, would taste delicious with a slug of gin added). Rooibos adds tea depth and mild tannin, the honey complements baking spices, and citrus brightens the palate.

The Runner's Revival

  • 75ml chilled spiced orange & rooibos tea* (brewed strong and cooled)

  • 15ml honey syrup (or agave for vegan option)

  • 15ml fresh lemon juice

  • Top with soda water

  • Orange wheel & star anise - to garnish

Shake tea, honey syrup, lemon juice, and gin with ice to combine and chill.

Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice, and top with soda

Garnish with an orange wheel and a star anise

Iechyd da - and if you'd like to support our fundraising, you can make a donation to Wales Air Ambulance Charity using our Go Fund Me page!

*If you can't find orange and rooibos tea, brew up some plain rooibos with a couple of slices of orange and use that instead!
