Frequently Asked Questions
The upfront cost of laying down a 30L cask is £2000, which excludes VAT.
VAT, duty and bottling costs are due at the end of the maturation period
and will be charged at the current rate. As an estimate, this will be
around £1000-£1200.
All the Welsh Single Malt Whisky in our casks is distilled, casked, matured and bottled here on site at the distillery in Tanygroes, Ceredigion.
This varies depending on maturation length, evaporation during maturation
(known as the Angel's share) and the abv you choose to bottle at, but
you can expect to receive between 22 and 40 bottles of whisky.
New Make Spirit comes off our still and goes into your cask to mature into
Single Malt Welsh Whisky. It needs to be in the cask for 3 years and a
day to be legally called Welsh Whisky.
Although the minimum maturation period is 3 years and a day, we can offer a
fourth year of maturation for a small storage and cask hire fee. At the
end of this time, the whisky will need to be bottled.
We will be in touch a little before the end of the maturation period to arrange you tasting samples. This can be via post
or you are welcome to come to the distillery for a tasting. We will
also ask for words to put on your personalised label in preparation for
bottling. You can choose to bottle your whisky at cask strength or
bottle strength (46%vol)
Once your maturation date is reached, we will schedule your cask to be
disgorged and bottled. Then we will send your final invoice which needs
to be paid before your bottles can leave the distillery.
You can choose to fill your cask with New Make Spirit made using either
kilned or un-kilned barley. Kilned barley will have a flavour profile
more commonly found in whisky such as biscuit, malt flavours. Un-kilned
barley is grown for us within 10 miles of our distillery and malted on
site using a traditional 'green malting’ process which means the final
whisky will have a fresher flavour profile with common tasting notes
such as cut grass and green tea.
We will pre-season your cask for you with one of the following liquids,
which you choose when you order; Golden Rum, Dry Sherry, Palo Cortado
Sherry, Sweet Sherry, Ruby Port, Vintage Port, Red Wine, Sweet White Wine or Tequila. You can also choose to have your cask unseasoned.
Yes, the distillery is open Monday – Saturday 9am-5pm and we encourage cask
owners to come along for a free tour and a coffee, and to see their cask by appointment.
Yes, a 100ml sample can be drawn annually, on request, from your cask which we can either post out to you, or you can come to the distillery to taste it. Please note that we require a minimum of two weeks' notice to draw samples from casks.
Yes, cask owners receive first access to all limited edition releases from
the distillery. You will also receive a 20% off discount code to use on
our website and in the distillery shop on all standard 70cl bottles in
our range.
We occasionally run cask owner exclusive events at the distillery, which you will get a VIP invite to.
Whilst your purchase does not include the cask itself, just the hire and
storage of it for the maturation period, if you wish to purchase your
cask as a keepsake, please speak to us when we are discussing the
bottling of your whisky with you and we can give you a price to be able to take the cask home with you too.
Please direct all enquiries to caskowner@inthewelshwind.co.uk.
